About Electrum Academic Bursary
We’re proud to have some of the best minds in the business working in our business. Electrum is always on the lookout for new talent – that means people with both a strong academic record and a good communication skills. We have several bursary programmes, including the AAA Electrum Academic Bursary, All About Awesome Women in Tech Bursary and the Electrum Foundation Bursary.
Electrum is a financial technology company focused on payment solutions for retailers, banks, and mobile network service providers. Innovative transaction processing technology for point of sale or remote purchases form the core of Electrum’s business. Electrum works with retail industry heavyweights Clicks, Shoprite, Massmart, and Pick ‘n Pay. It is also collaborating with Capitec Bank, one of South Africa’s newest banking institutions that has grabbed a sizable portion of the market.
To create sustainable pools of computer scientists keeping South Africa on the cutting edge of technological advances, Electrum offers bursaries to second and final year undergraduates studying Computer Science or Computer Engineering at the University of Cape Town and Stellenbosch University, both located in the Western Cape.
Electrum Academic Bursary
Electrum has a commitment to the development of students with high potential talents and as such, offers three types of scholarship programmes for deserving students. This scholarship helps these students continue their education, specifically in the field of informational technology. These are the bursary programmes:
AAA Academic Bursary Programme
This bursary covers the following costs:
- Full tuition fees for the student’s last year of qualification
- Accommodation
- Textbooks
- A laptop
Additionally, the successful beneficiaries get the opportunity for an internship intake or even mentorship. They will also have to render work-back service to Electrum for 1 year.
Who can apply?
- Students of Computer Science, Computer Engineering or related fields:
- in 2nd or final year undergraduate or honours year
- at UCT or Stellenbosch
- Students with 65% minimum for all Computer Science modules
- Students who maintain a 65% average, and no failed subject
All About Awesome Women in Tech Bursary
Who can apply?
- Female students in Computer Science, Computer Engineering or related fields:
- in 2nd or final year undergraduate, or honours year
- at UCT or Stellenbosch
- Students with 65% minimum for all Computer Science modules
- We encourage women from previously disadvantaged backgrounds to apply
What does the Electrum All About Awesome Women in Tech Bursary entail?
We’re doing our best to encourage more women to enter the Fintech field. This bursary covers the following:
- Full tuition for final year
- A new laptop
- Textbooks
- Accommodation fees
- Career guidance from mentors
- Assistance with CV building
- Coaching on interview technique

Electrum Foundation Bursary
Who can apply?
- Students of Computer Science, Computer Engineering or related fields:
- who do not have financial means for studies
- in 2nd or 3rd year undergraduate or honours year
- at UWC, CPUT, UNISA, UCT or Stellenbosch
What does the Electrum Foundation Bursary entail?
This is our way of helping deserving students with financial difficulties achieve their goals of becoming IT professionals, especially software developers. The bursary covers the following:
- Full tuition
- Textbooks
